Pretty Flowers

from My Shady Days by Chad Shue

/

about

Written in 1967 when I was 14 years old, "Pretty Flowers" was influenced by the ongoing Vietnam Conflict and Anti-war movement in the country. Country Joe and the Fish's "I Feel Like I'm Fixin to Die Rag" was a major inspiration for this song.

lyrics

Pretty Flowers

Pretty Flowers in her hair; dancing round without a care
People dancing in the streets; grooving to the band with the swingin beat
Everybody’s having fun, but me, I’m stuck here with a gun you see
Oh I hope you see

I don’t know what I’m here for. I didn’t start this crazy war
I got a letter from my Uncle Sam, with a one way ticket to Viet Nam
Everybody’s having fun, but me, I’m stuck here with a gun you see
Oh I hope you see

They don’t care if I come back (Already) They got my house all painted black
They got me stuck way up here in a tree. Supposed to shoot the first human being I see
Everybody’s having fun, but me, I’m stuck here with a gun you see
Oh I hope you see

How I wish that I was there, with pretty flowers in my hair
I’d be there dancing in the street, just grooving to the band with the swinging beat
Everybody’s having fun, but me, I’m stuck here with a gun you see
Oh I hope you see

Pretty Flowers in her hair; dancing round without a care
People dancing in the streets; grooving to the band with the swingin beat
Everybody’s having fun, but me, I’m stuck here with a gun you see
Oh I hope you see Oh I hope you see
